Trip Reports / Eddystone Challenge - 16th August 2008
« Last post by dan jones on August 18, 2008, 06:54:57 PM »
Luis, Alex and I participated in the 'Eddystone challenge' organised by the Mayflower Offshore Rowing Club on 16th August 2008.  We had prepared for the challenge with some long paddles in the preceding weeks.

After a 5 hour drive down to Devon from London on the Friday we camped at a site in Brixton (just outside Plymouth).  The campsite was quite nice, but our sleep was interrupted by noisy night time road resurfacing work nearby.  Not ideal preparation for the long day ahead.

Due to foul weather (heavy rain and strong winds) the route of the challenge was changed so that instead of heading out to the lighthouse, we merely had to cross Plymouth Sound and up the Tamar and back again (approximately 20 miles in total).

The challenge was plainly designed more with gigs and whalers in mind and in our single kayaks it took the CSCC contingent 2 hours to reach the mid way point and by then we were already well behind all but two of the other kayakers and rowers.  I had been troubled by weather-cocking and couldn't drop the skeg to improve my tracking and so was persuaded to abandon using my beloved inuit paddle (or 'plank' as the organisers were referring to it on channel 71) in favour of a Lendal.  We still made little impression on everyone else and remained last in the race.

Paddling against the midpoint of a spring tide was - Luis asked me to put this in - 'excruciating' and it took us three hours to get as far as the marina (still some way short of the finishing point).  We were tailed by a safety boat as we inched forwards.  The final straw for me came when we were forced by a police boat to give up hard fought progress to allow a ship past and shortly afterwards Luis and I accepted a lift back from a RIB.  I was now very tired and almost got minced by the RIB's engine as I waited to be picked up.

Alex gamely stuck it out on his own and was the last man home under his own steam.  Several other kayakers in front of him had to be rescued in the Sound, so finishing the course was a real achievement.  Alex's fortitude was not universally appreciated by the trip organisers who were (quite reasonably) keen to get off the water after 6 hours out in mostly unseasonally bad weather conditions.

The other participants in the event and the organisers were a jolly bunch (particularly the rowers), but it was a bonkers trip really.  The course was fantastic from a scenic point of view, but the race element meant that I almost failed to notice.  We didn't actually need shepherding by safety boats, as there was little risk of capsizing.  I couldn't get out of my head that I would be much better off getting off the water, stretching my legs, having some food and drink, taking some photos and waiting for the tide to turn!  That wouldn't have been an option if we'd had to paddle to Eddystone of course.

Our dinners at the Rose and Crown and the Sea Food Restaurant in the next village along from Brixton were both good.  Definitely recommended.

I was glad that I saved a bit of energy for the drive home the following morning - we passed a completely burnt out Fiesta on the other side of the motorway.

Trip Reports / Thames Source to Sea - Windsor to Laleham II - 27 July 2008
« Last post by dan jones on August 04, 2008, 06:09:08 PM »
The re-run of the Windsor to Laleham leg of the Thames Source to Sea programme yesterday proved very enjoyable.  The views of Windsor Castle were great and Staines also looked nice from the river.  It was one of the warmest days of the year (about 30 degree C) with lots of sunshine.  I even rolled a couple of times to cool down.

We got in by the Leisure centre in Windsor.  The cark park charges there are now exorbitantly high (a tenner for a full day), but it does offer easy access to the river.

The trip length was about 11 miles.  There was a conveniently located pub about half way into the trip where we stopped to get cool drinks to go with our picnics.  It was easy to land there, but there was a lot of traffic belting along the adjoining road, so it wasn't terribly tranquil.

We managed to avoid a portage at most of the locks by sneaking in with the motor boats, although one of the lock keepers seemed gleefully determined to make us go right at the back of the largest lock (where we would have ended up being choked by diesel fumes).

The get out was on Ferry Lane in Laleham just down-stream of the rowing club (they were having a regatta which looked great fun) and the camp site.  The public car park there was much cheaper, but very busy.

Julian, Russ, Stephen, John and I paddled.

I tested out the club's new wooden touring paddle.  It is surprisingly light given its size.  Give it a try.

The lake in which we took the safety test featured in Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange".  In the film Alex throws one of his droogs into the lake.

Trip Reports / 8-9 March 2008 - River Banwy, Wales
« Last post by dan jones on July 25, 2008, 01:53:33 PM »
Thanks to Dan for organising an excellent trip, and commiserations for not being able to make it himself!

On both days we paddled the Banwy from Llanfair to Meifod. Water levels were higher than last year, making for a pleasant paddle. No swims or even rolls to report, except for Chris offering throwline practice during Saturday's lunch stop. Clearly his drysuit is effective. On the second day things were more familiar, which meant the group tried for more of the break-outs and small surf waves, which was good.

B&B at Tynllwyn farm was good as last year, with an enormous evening meal. And for the second year in a row Diane provided exceedingly good cake. Unfortunately she also provided a telly for watching England vs Scotland, but at least Fiona was happy.

This took place at Southmere Boating Centre, Thamesmead. The purpose of the course was to provide an improved safety awareness and to learn rescue skills which can be used to help yourself and/or others in difficulty. There was the chance to get the canoe safety test qualification which is a pre-req for joining the BCU coaching scheme. Further details:
