We are a small, friendly, mixed club of enthusiastic canoeists, of all abilities, ages and interests. We cater for Civil Servants and employees of other bodies affiliated to CSSC Sports and Leisure, mainly based in the London area.

We meet weekly, and also have a programme of weekend trips, both locally and throughout the UK, as well as holidays abroad. Our current interests are touring, white water and sea kayaking.

For newcomers, this site aims to give you an introduction to the Club, and what we get up to; tell you how to contact us for more details, to join etc.

For members, the site aims to provide a useful reference source - for the latest Calendar information, Club rules, forms etc, plus links to useful web sites etc, including information on canoeing elsewhere in the UK, and on other sports and leisure activities available in the Civil Service.

New guidebook by Peter Knowles

The South East of England has long been neglected in terms of canoeing guidebooks so any new guidebook covering the area would be welcome. This one is particularly well designed and illustrated with maps and photographs and contains lots of useful detail for planning trips. Although the suggested trips are on the whole rather shorter than we would expect to do in a day of inland touring, they include suggestions for extending the trips and also mention other paddling  possibilities nearby. Certain members will appreciate the numerous references to riverside tea shops, cafes and pubs. Judging by the entries for the River Mole and Shepperton, which we have recently paddled, the information is accurate and well researched. All in all this book is highly recommended for anyone planning an inland canoe or kayak touring trip in the area bounded by Southampton to the West and Cambridge  to the North.

News and Snippets.

Weekly Meetings:

From Tuesday 18 May though to and including Tuesday 24 August we will be meeting at 6.30pm (for a 7.00pm launch). From Tuesday 31 August until the end of the season the meeting time will go back to 6pm (for 6.30pm).

Next trips/events:

7-8 August: River Tryweryn. On the weekend of 7-8 August, the club will be going to North Wales for some grade 2-3 white water. The Tryweryn is dam-released and so should be running despite dry conditions elsewhere, but we’ll double check nearer the time. We will be camping somewhere nearby. This trip is suitable for anyone who has already done some form of white water – if you were on Tom’s recent trip (and enjoyed it!), this could be the next step? Or if you’re finding the Tuesday night Thames sessions a ‘doddle’, and won’t be put off by the occasional swim? Check with Fiona if you’re not sure.

Contact Fiona if you are interested, at freid@sgul.ac.uk, by Sunday 1 August.

Touring trip on the River Wye Fri 20th - Sun 23rd Aug

The trip is suitable for paddlers at all levels, and will take in some very scenic areas of the Wye Valley. Due to very low water levels this trip will take in the middle stretches of the Wye above Symonds Yat. For those who will need an adrenaline boost the rapids at Symonds Yat come at the end of the trip and those who wish can have a play before departing for home.

Whilst primarily an open boat trip, kayaks are welcome, so please indicate in your replies if you would prefer a kayak or open boat.

Accommodation has been booked at Broome Farm (a working cider farm) near Ross on Wye for both the Friday and Saturday nights so no packing up to do.

Club Library

The club has a small library of paddling books available for members to borrow.  Most of the books are new, including a number of Franco Fererro's excellent Pesda Press titles, Olli Grau's "White Water kayaking" and Gordon Brown's "Sea Kayaking" to name just a few.  The book list can be found on the members' forum in the  "General Discussion and Social Stuff" section. Members are welcome to suggest additional books and DVDs for the library. Loans or donations of paddling books which you no longer need are also very welcome.

Calendar was last updated on 23 April 2010.

For regular discussion and info on canoeing stuff, see the club forum or the discussion boards at UK Rivers Guidebook and Song of the Paddle.
