Duties of Leader on the river

  • Welcome paddlers – seeking confirmation that any newcomers can swim & give them an opportunity to mention any medical conditions or disabilities which may impact significantly on their participation
  • Supervise distribution of boats, paddles, buoyancy aids, spray-decks & head torches
  • Explain to newcomers how to exit the boat safely if they capsize
  • Bring throwlines to attach to boat of any novices who don’t have a boat with an inbuilt skeg
  • Bring a first aid kit
  • Bring a rescue sling
  • Give safety briefing before everyone launches and get everyone to introduce themselves
  • Coach any inexperienced paddlers (unless stated otherwise above)
  • Respond if anyone gets into difficulties on the water
  • Make sure that everyone is safely off the water at the end of the session
  • Supervise storing of boats/paddles/buoyancy aids, spray-decks & headtorches
  • Tell newcomers how to pay for session or join club
  • Report any incidents (collisions or near misses) and any damage to boat or equipment
