Weekly meetings

See the Club calendar for full current details, dates etc. But in general we meet most Tuesdays throughout the year ... See the "weekly calendar/rota" page for specific details of who's in charge and anything specific that's planned.

Pool meetings

Pool pictureMap of Porchester centre... take place every Tuesday (from October to December 2018) between 9-10pm in the main swimming pool at the Porchester Centre, Bayswater - at the north end of Queensway, just west of Paddington (see map).  Bayswater, Queensway and Royal Oak are generally the most convenient tube stations.

The rota of who's expected to be in charge each week is available here.

Please make sure you get there in time to get changed and ready to meet on the poolside by 9pm. The cost is £4 for members, £8 for non-members.  You pay us at the end of the evening - not the centre on the way in.  The lockers in the changing room take a 20p or £1 piece (but give it back later).

Everyone should make the effort to come, no matter how inexperienced or experienced - it's to your advantage! We provide coaching and practice etc. for all standards from complete beginners. You only need to bring swimming things (including goggles): boats and equipment are provided.  Each week includes time for training and practice in all the canoeing strokes and skills, including Eskimo rolling, see- www.youtube.com/watch

We usually end the session with a 20 minute "canoe polo" game, which provides a great opportunity for everyone, no matter how good or bad your paddling skills, to get stuck in and fling a ball around!  We don't take this too seriously, the emphasis is on fun, and it's a great way of improving your paddling.

We usually find a few minutes to chat in 'The Porchester' pub nearby afterwards where we discuss upcoming weekend trips etc.

Thames meetings

In the Spring and Summer pool sessions are replaced with regular Tuesday evening paddles on the Thames at Chiswick.
Sessions restart in April.

Paddling on the Thames

Directions to Chiswick

Chiswick mapOur boathouse is located in the King's House Sports Ground on Riverside Drive, Dukes Meadows in Chiswick (W4 2SH).  The best way to get to our boathouse from central London is by train to Barnes Bridge station (from Waterloo, Vauxhall or Clapham Junction).  From the station (see sketch map):

  • Cross the Thames using the bridge which can be accessed on foot from the platform used for catching London-bound trains.
  • At the bottom of the steps on the far (Middlesex) side of Barnes bridge turn left (not straight on down the river footpath - if you come to the Civil Service Rowing Club boathouse, you've gone the wrong way).
  • After walking about 50 metres parallel to the railway embankment, bear right, cross a road and you will see a large blue sign and a gate at the beginning of a path marking the pedestrian entrance to the King's House Sports Ground.  Enter here and walk about 250 metres along the narrow footpath which passes between thick vegetation and the wall of a private tennis centre.
  • The building in the Sports Ground where we meet is part of the fenced-off groundsmen's compound, on the right hand side after walking down the footpath previously mentioned.  There's a big white CSCC Canoe Club sign on the exterior wall of our shed.
  • If you need to get changed into your canoeing gear, you can change in the pavilion opposite the groundsman's compound (on the other side of a car park).

If you're travelling by car, Riverside Drive is a turning off the main A316 road. Coming from the A4 at Hammersmith/Chiswick, it's the second "real" traffic lights.  If you get to Chiswick Bridge you've gone much too far. Coming northwards up the A316 from Richmond, turn right at the second traffic lights after you've crossed Chiswick Bridge.  The King's House Sports Ground is the last entrance on the right before you get to the river Embankment.  There is usually ample parking.  If you need any further directions, contact us.
